Website Accessibility Testing

Ensuring designs are compliant with accessibility standards, conducting assistive technology testing, and addressing barriers that may hinder inclusivity.

When to test

What is website accessibility testing?

Website accessibility testing assess a website’s compliance with accessibility standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 to ensure it is usable to those with any visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. Most testing assesses against 78 criterion categorised by perceivability, operability, understandability and robustness; covering text, image, visual and audio elements. However, partial evaluations can also be completed, such as on a user interface design and minimum viable products that showcase a level of functionality.

When to conduct an accessibility evaluation

During the design phase

Ensuring accessible design right from the start is essential. Conducting an evaluation during the design phase or when iterating helps identify and rectify any potential accessibility issues early on, particularly when it comes to colour contrast; the content and its structure; spacing of text; and elements like hover states, press states, and focus states.

During development or exploration

When creating a minimum viable product (MVP) or exploring new functions and workflows, conducting an accessibility evaluation can be crucial. It provides insights into how these features might impact users with disabilities, and whether they are on track for compliance - particularly for criterion like error identification, error prevention and user guidance.

As a whole-of-site review

A comprehensive accessibility evaluation across your entire website is beneficial. These reviews help you ensure you’ve stayed compliant through the design and development process. However, it’s not just about compliance, it’s about continuously enhancing the user experience for all visitors, regardless of their abilities. If your website is large, you can tackle an evaluation in segments, or review the data to see which pages would benefit the most from a review.

As part of ongoing maintenance

Websites evolve, and content or functionality can change. Regular maintenance should include accessibility reviews to verify that the new content, features, or functionality remain accessible. An ongoing commitment to accessibility ensures your site will remain compliant, and continue to meet the needs of all users.
